Building a business case for workplace menstrual hygiene management programs: a social cost–benefit analysis

Abstract Inadequate menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) pose a great challenge for working women, affecting their productivity, job satisfaction, attendance, advancement, also have implications employers. Yet, there has been little research to quantify the impacts of poor MHH conditions nor consider value add workplace programs. As part USAID's Water Sanitation Hygiene Partnerships Learning Sustainability project, we conducted social cost–benefit analysis (CBA) Menstrual Management (MHM) in Workplace Action Research, 10-month intervention private sector enterprises Nepal Kenya. The aimed determine if providing adequate MHM contributes women's economic empowerment, including improved business outcomes. This CBA – first its kind found positive return investing average benefit–cost ratio base-case across factories was 1.4, which increased 2.3 when projected over 24 months. These early results pilot on should serve as call greater attention by governments businesses needs menstruating women.
